The Seconds, After Firsts
Poem by Sameer Khan

The second time you fall in love with someone, you’re going to feel so relieved. When you get your heart broken for the first time, you can’t imagine loving someone else again or having someone else love you.
The second time you fall in love with someone, it’s going to feel different. The first time felt like a dream almost. You were untouched, untainted by anyone. You accepted love with wide open arms and desperation.
This poem is a depiction of how it feels like to fall in love again after getting your heart broken by your first love.

It’s hard to believe,
That it happened yet again.
That it has hovered over you, yet again.
And this time, it’s again relieving the pain.
It’s the same. Excitement and happiness,
It’s again the butterflies with her voice,
It’s again the efforts of giving everything.
It’s the shattered rainbows and rejoice.
There’s a fear, will it end with same tears?
It’s like the fortune written, over a piece of paper.
But we’re scared to remove the rock above it.
Pretending this way, our hearts will be safer.
All those dark nights, and loneliness.
Where we sharpened our broken pieces with angst and pain.
Has stopped now and the broken mirror seems beautiful.
Everything seems lovely, sun, skies and the rain.
You allow them to rebuild you,
Make you a pretty castle of glass, ready to reign.
Their broken pieces add to your beauty.
And thus you realise, you’re in love, yet again
